Letter from the editor

By Stephanie Ting, Southern California '16, electronic editor

When I was 7 years old, I made an important life decision. The road in front of me diverged and I stood at the crossroad. I stared at the branching paths, unsure which direction was better.

“If you turn left, toward the mountains, turn to page 16.” “If you turn right, into the valley, turn to page 31.”

In my hand was “Secret of the Ninja,” a volume of the beloved “Choose Your Own Adventure” series. I was on a thrilling mission in Japan battling a horde of angry ninjas and discovering the secrets of a mysterious cursed sword. “You’re the star of the story,” the book proclaimed. “Twenty-nine exciting endings!”

So, I turned left toward the mountain and flipped to page 16. My foray up the mountain in search of an old monk led me to an old stone well on page 44. Curiosity got the best of me, so I peeked into the well only to lose my balance and fall into it on page 33. Well crap. I don’t like that ending. Maybe I’ll turn back to page 44 and choose the other option?

These books enthralled a large number of children in their heyday. What drew my 7-year-old imagination to the “Choose Your Own Adventure” series was the power of choice. I was in full control of the story and it was empowering. But what if you made the wrong choice? The beauty was that at any point in time, you could go back and redefine your story. Page one reads, “You and YOU ALONE are in charge of what happens in this story. There are dangers, choices, adventures and consequences. At any time, YOU can go back and make another choice, alter the path of your story, and change its result.”

Looking back, I’m amazed at how much life wisdom is contained in these simple instructions. You have the freedom to choose your own path. You have the power to change the course of your story. It’s that simple.  Keep reading...
