CHICAGO, Sept. 9, 2019 — The American Association of Dental Editors & Journalists (AADEJ) has selected Contour, the American Student Dental Association’s flagship magazine, as the recipient of the 2019 Meskin Journalism Award. The honor is presented annually to one United States or Canadian dental student publication in recognition of overall excellence in publishing, including editorial content and design.
This is the third Meskin Journalism Award presented to the American Student Dental Association. In 2011 and 2012, ASDA’s then quarterly publication, Mouth, received the award.
“This wouldn’t be possible without the hard work that our authors and editors put into each issue,” said Editor-in-Chief Jeannie Binder, Texas-Houston ’21, who accepted the award on behalf of ASDA at the AADEJ Annual Conference Sept. 4 in San Francisco. More than 90 student authors contribute to the success of Contour each year.
“ASDA’s student-member editorial board, Publications Manager Frances Moffett and Designer Kristen Villalongo consistently plan and publish content that is valuable to our readers,” said Nancy Honeycutt, CAE, ASDA’s executive director. “Including authors from dental schools around the country ensures that we feature the most current and diverse topics of interest to dental students.”
The American Student Dental Association is a 24,000-member student-run association that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. ASDA is the largest dental student organization, representing 92 percent of all students at each of the nation’s 66 dental schools. ASDA and its members advocate locally and nationally for licensure reform, eliminating barriers to care and addressing dental student debt. Beyond advocacy, ASDA programming focuses its members on leadership development, wellness, ethics and education regarding outreach to underserved and diverse populations.
