According to ADEA, the average dental student graduates with more than $260,000 of debt. The following is a non-exhaustive list of scholarships available to dental students (and a few for predentals) to help alleviate the cost of dental school. Members are encouraged to do their own research for additional scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships for current dental students
ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Students Pursuing Academic Careers
Who: Must be an ADEA individual member enrolled in a predoctoral dental program at an ADEA member institution, with a demonstrated interested in a career in dental education
Amount: $5,500 ($4,500 for tuition, $500 to subsidize travel to ADEA Annual Session, $500 to subsidize travel to visit the Procter & Gamble Research Center in Mason, OH)
ADEA/GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Preventive Dentistry Scholarship
Who: Must be an ADEA individual member enrolled full-time in a U.S. dental school, with a demonstrated interested in preventive dentistry. Must be nominated by dean or dean’s designate (limit of three nominations per school)
Chinese American Medical Society Scholarship Program
Who: Available to first-, second- or third-year dental students; credit given for work or research in support of health care in the Chinese community
Amount: $5,000 (non-renewable)
Dental Trade Alliance Foundation Scholarships
Who: third- or fourth-year dental students with good academic standing and financial need. Dental school deans may nominate one student per school (individually submitted applications not accepted).
Amount: variable number of $5,000 awards
E. "Bud" Tarrson Dental School Student Community Leadership Award
Who: Dental student groups enrolled in a predoctoral dental education program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, which are involved in an outreach program to vulnerable communities within the U.S. The ADA Foundation accepts one application from each dental school.
Amount: Multiple awards of $5,000 - $20,000, depending on the number of applicants, will be made to a dental school/college in honor of the outreach program. Award funds must be expressly used to enhance student service learning and outreach to underserved populations.
Deadline:The first Friday in November (application deadline). Apply online (use this worksheet to prepare). You will be taken to a third party website to complete the application.
Hartford Dental Society/James McManus Fund: Student Scholarships
Who: Dental students who reside in Connecticut, are in their third or fourth year at a New England dental school, and who are in academic good standing are eligible to apply.
Amount: Varies based on number of qualified applicants; multiple awards given (Typical Range: $1,000-$2,000)
Deadline: March 1
Hispanic Dental Association Foundation Scholarship
Who: Open to student members of the Hispanic Dental Association and the Hispanic Student Dental Association who have been accepted or are currently enrolled into an accredited dental program.
Amount: $2,000 (multiple scholarships available)
Hispanic Dental Association Foundation Scholarship (third- and fourth-years)
Who: Open to dental student members of the Hispanic Dental Association and the Hispanic Student Dental Association who are currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of an accredited dental program.
Hispanic Dental Association Foundation Scholarship (Texas)
Who: Open to dental student members of the Hispanic Dental Association and the Hispanic Student Dental Association who are currently enrolled in an accredited dental program in the state of Texas.
Hispanic Dental Association Foundation Scholarship (first-, second- and third-years)
Who: Open to dental student members of the Hispanic Dental Association and the Hispanic Student Dental Association who are currently enrolled in the first, second or third year of an accredited dental program.
National Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship
Who: Any student currently enrolled in an accredited dental school, with exceptional academic performance and documented leadership activities. Applicants must demonstrate an affinity for the health of Hispanic communities and an interest in participating in NHHF Scholars Alumni activities
Amount: 15-20 awards of varying amounts
Tylenol Future Care Scholarship
Who: Currently enrolled dental students with one or more years of school remaining.
Amount: Ten $10,000 scholarships, thirty $5,000 scholarships and up to 20 scholarships ranging from $500-$2,500 will be awarded annually. All are non-renewable.
Scholarships for predentals
Barry Goldwater Scholarship
HOSA – Future Health Professionals scholarship
Who: Full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited 4-year or 2-year institution. Applicants must be nominated by their institutions.
Amount: Scholarships of up to $7,500 a year are provided to help cover costs associated with tuition, fees, books, room and board. A sophomore will receive up to $7,500 in each of his/her junior and senior years. A junior will receive up to $7,500 in his/her senior year.
Crack the DAT Predental Scholarship
Who: Applicants are required to be enrolled full-time seeking a career in dentistry and at least a junior in college (or graduated).
Amount: Up to $1,000
: HOSA members in high school or college to aspire to a career in dentistry
: $1,000 - $2,000
Hunter and Spence Scholarship
Who: High school seniors, undergraduate or graduate students in a U.S. accredited institution. Applicants must submit an essay on a designated topic.
