Meet the 2020 VLC Planning Committee

Dr. Abby Halpern | Planning Committee Chair | Georgia ’18, 2017-18 Speaker of the House

Dr. Abby Halpern is a general dentist at Virginia Dental Center right outside of Washington, DC. After earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill, she interned at the ADA’s DC office, where she fell in love with organized dentistry and advocacy.

Dr. Halpern earned her DMD at the Dental College of Georgia in 2018 and was actively involved in ASDA throughout her dental school career. She served as national ASDA Speaker of the House in 2017-18, member and later Chair for the Council on Advocacy, ADPAC Student Director, Chair of the ASDA Delegation to the 2017 ADA Annual Session, and Committee Member in planning the first joint ADA and Dental Student Lobby Day.

Dr. Halpern returned to the DC area after graduation and completed a GPR at the Washington DC VA Medical Center in 2019. She and her husband continue to occupy themselves exploring all that the city has to offer in food, fun, and adventure. 

Dr. Andrew Bohnsack | Minnesota ’11, 2009-10 District 8 Trustee

Dr. Andrew Bohnsack is a general dentist in rural central Minnesota. He holds a B.A. from Concordia College (2006) and earned his DDS from the University of Minnesota (2011). While in dental school, Dr. Bohnsack was heavily involved in ASDA and held roles including:  U of MN Lunch n Learn Coordinator; District 8 Trustee; ADA CEBJA Student Rep; ADA Council on Scientific Affairs Student Rep; and attended all the local, regional, and national meetings along the way.

After dental school, Dr. Bohnsack earned his AEGD certificate from Idaho State University, which he credits with giving him the training and confidence needed to take over his father’s small private practice in his childhood hometown in 2013. Since purchasing the family practice, he has built a brand new facility and grown his staff from 3 to 10, including hiring an associate dentist.

Dr. Bohnsack is married to his wife of 10 years and they have three girls ages 6 months to 7 years. He enjoys spending time at their hobby farm caring for their horses, mini donkey, rabbits, chickens, mini pig and barn cats. 

Dr. Kerin Jamison | Louisville ’13, 2012-13 Council on Education & Licensure Chair

Dr. Kerin Jamison served as the ASDA Chair of the Council on Education and Licensure from 2012-13. She received her DMD degree from the University of Louisville, completed a specialty program at the US Army’s Advanced Education in Prosthodontics and received her Masters of Science in oral biology from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. After graduation she spent 3 years practicing and as the prosthodontic mentor in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Dr. Jamison is currently completing a fellowship in Oral Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She is a member of the American Dental Association, American College of Prosthodontics and the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. 

Dr. James Kolstad | Marquette ’15, 2013-14 Council on Membership Chair

Dr. James A. Kolstad is a 2015 graduate of the Marquette University School Dentistry and completed the orthodontic residency program at Marquette in 2018.  Dr. Kolstad was an active member of ASDA while a dental student at both the local and national levels.  He served in a number of chapter leadership roles culminating as Marquette ASDA’s president.  At the national level, Dr. Kolstad served on ASDA’s Membership Committee for 2 years and as the chair of the Leadership Development Work Group.

Dr. Kolstad is an active member within organized dentistry, currently serving on the Wisconsin Dental Association Membership Development Committee and the Wisconsin Society of Orthodontists board.  He is also a member of the Marquette University School of Dentistry Admissions Committee.

Dr. Kolstad is currently a practicing orthodontist at Reichl & Kolstad Orthodontics. When Dr. Kolstad isn’t straightening teeth, he enjoys playing sports, traveling, and being outdoors. 

Aditi Desai | Roseman ’21, 2020-21 Vice President

Aditi is pursuing her DMD at Roseman University College of Dental Medicine and currently serves as ASDA Vice President.

Aditi has served as a member of Roseman’s Advocacy and Community Outreach Committee and as vendor relations chair where she raised more than $80,000 for her ASDA chapter. As ASDA District 10 Trustee, she inspired students to apply for district and national leadership roles for almost all of the national councils and started an annual leadership retreat. She is also a member of the Hispanic Dental Association, Special Care Dentistry Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. 

Nancy Honeycutt | ASDA Executive Director

Nancy Honeycutt, CAE, has served as ASDA Executive Director since 2003. In addition to overseeing the operations of ASDA, she has helped advance its mission by creating programs that assist members on their personal and professional development journeys.  She created ASDA’s first National Leadership Conference in 2012 to offer curriculum focused on developing leadership skills. ASDA’s Wellness Initiative was also launched under her leadership to educate and provide resources to dental students on addressing wellness in their lives.

Nancy was most recently recognized for her contributions to the advancement of the art and science of dentistry, and her passion and mentorship in preparing dental students to enter the profession by the ADA Board of Trustees, who named her an honorary ADA member. Other past honors include the 2012 Inspiring Leader of the Year Award from the Association Forum of Chicago; 2013 Honorary Member in the Academy of General Dentistry; and 2016 Honorary Fellowship in the American College of Dentists.
