As my first year as a member of ASDA staff comes to a close, I’m contemplating all I have learned from predentals. I’ve had conversations with you over email, phone and social media, at ASDA events, career fairs, even at your schools. I’ve come to understand the many challenges you face, the expectations and the adversity. I think about all of the pressure on you, some self-imposed, some from a guardian or partner, but all weighing heavily on you nonetheless. I’d like to offer advice to you through some of my favorite movie quotes.
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us”
Your decision to be a part of organized dentistry represents your desire and commitment to one day be a dental student, and eventually a dentist. ASDA can give you the tools to accomplish this but it’s up to you to use them. If you are reading this, then you are taking a necessary step in using a key benefit. Don’t forget to take advantage of everything ASDA has to offer!
“Help will always be given…to those who ask for it”
Asking for help can be one of the most difficult things to do. This is why you will find no shortage of self-help books in your school’s library. However, books cannot compete with the wealth of information a dental student can offer. Lucky for you, there are nearly 10 dental students for every predental at ASDA. Don’t let your problem grow from an obstacle into a crisis. All you need to do is ask!
“It ain’t about how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward”
There will be setbacks, detours and unforeseen results. You may not score as well as you hoped on the DAT. You may not get an interview at your dream school. You may not get into one of the schools at the top of your list. You may not even get into dental school on your first attempt. That doesn’t mean the journey ends. If this is your dream, then you (and only you) get to write the ending.
I look forward to helping you achieve your dream.
