As advocates for the wellbeing of dental students, patients and our profession, ASDA will address a wide range of issues at our upcoming Annual Session. Student leaders will discuss hot topics in dentistry, including dentists’ roles in administering vaccines and prescribing marijuana. Tune into this session to learn more about these subjects as well as policy resolutions passed during Annual Session. We’ll also review how you can create change by submitting your own resolutions at next year’s Annual Session.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the current most discussed issues facing the dental profession.
  2. Conceptualize how these issues may affect our lives as dental students, future providers, and the health of our patients.
  3. Think comprehensively about challenges facing our profession, and understand how to go advocate for policy changes that benefit our peers and our patients.

Sebastian Celis Cifuentes - HeadshotSebastian Celis Cifuentes; Columbia ’22; 2020-21 Council on Advocacy Chair

Sebastian Celis Cifuentes is the 2020-2021 Chair for the ASDA Council on Advocacy. He is also ASDA Chapter President at Columbia University. Through his role as Council Chair, Sebastian has gotten the chance to review proposed policy platforms such as dentists’ scope as it regards medical marijuana and vaccination administration.

Jake Holtzmann - HeadshotJake Holtzmann; Colorado ’22; 2020-21 Council on Advocacy Legislative Coordinator, Districts 8 & 9 

As a third-year dental student at the University of Colorado, Jake has served as an ASDA Events Chair at the local and district levels, has represented ASDA’s 8th and 9th Districts on the Council on Advocacy, and has served on the Colorado Dental Association (CDA) Government Relations Council. Stemming from his passion for advocacy, Jake has studied and published writings on several important issues facing our profession and our society, including gender and racial disparities in dentistry, the affordability and accessibility of dental care, the effects of COVID-19 on dentistry, and the dental administration of vaccines. In his free time, Jake enjoys exploring the hiking, skiing, and different breweries that Colorado has to offer.
