Picture this: you’ve graduated from dental school, you’re licensed to practice in your ideal location and you just opened your own boutique practice. How did you do it? What steps did you take to get from dental student to practice owner? How long did it take?

This session will give you a snapshot of key factors and processes involved in purchasing a practice to help you determine if this is the right practice option for you and how to plan for the next steps. We’ll review the timeline needed to purchase a practice, key considerations, and common hurdles that current practice owners wish they had known when they started their journey to practice ownership.

  1. Outline fundamental factors to review when considering practice ownership from financial to legal implications.
  2. Create a basic timeline with key checkpoints for purchasing a practice based on their career pathway.
  3. Explore commonly misunderstood principles of first-time practice ownership.
Panelist

Dr. Shaun O’NeillShaun O’Neill, DDS; Iowa ’17; 2016-17 District 8 Trustee

Dr. Shaun O’Neill graduated from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2017. During his time at the University of Iowa he was recognized with numerous awards from the college, university, and the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) for his leadership and clinical skills. Dr. O’Neill was the 2016-2017 District 8 Trustee. After graduation he moved to Fort Dodge where he joined Clay & Associates dental practice. Dr. O’Neill practiced for a year as an associate before becoming an owner in 2018. Since 2018, Dr. O’Neill has acquired, merged, and built several dental practices throughout Iowa.

 Outside of dentistry Dr. O’Neill enjoys spending as much time as he can with family and friends. You will often find him outdoors whether it is on the water, on his bike, at the golf course, or hiking trails around the Midwest. He has become an active skier in the winter and hopes to spend winter weekends at a ski hill.
