How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
As the chapter President at California Northstate University (CNU), ASDA has helped me develop more robust skills in managing a team, collaborating, networking, and most importantly for me, public speaking. Public speaking has always been my Achilles heel and ASDA compelled me to push through the anxiety drumming up to a speaking role in order to grow as a representative of my colleagues and my program. I highly encourage everyone to join some form of organized dentistry like ASDA as part of their personal development. The skills one develops will carry forward and nurture all aspects of our careers as a leader in practice and wherever else life takes us.

What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
I believe the most vital quality in a leader is being open minded. A good leader is someone who works collaboratively and encourages others to share ideas and opinions. Very often the knowledge and past experiences of others can open doors and resolve challenges that may have once seemed impossible. A team that feels safe to share their thoughts is a team that is willing to support each other as family.

Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
ASDA promotes a diverse spectrum of leadership roles from advocacy to outreach in our community and beyond. Members are encouraged to participate in areas they are personally interested in and find their passion projects. Leaders who support and grow their chapters may lead to more opportunities after dental school, a wider network of colleagues across the nation, and enrichment of one’s own leadership skills.

What future leadership roles in organized denstiry interest you and why?
After spending the past 9 months as ASDA President, I have come to recognize the importance representing the interests of our students and program. As the newest school on the west coast, our vision includes contributing beyond our local chapter through advancing relationships and advocating for our members. I hope to take what I have learned and continue forward in ASDA either on the national level or serving as a member of the D11 board. After dental school I hope to continue through my local dental society, the Sacramento District Dental Society.
