How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
Ever since my first year, I have observed and learned what it meant to be a strong, yet kind leader. I have learned how to advocate not just for myself, but for others as well- using that voice to uplift, protect, and push for positive change. ASDA has given me countless opportunities to grow into that version of myself. It gave me the space to lead, but more importantly, to learn how to support and trust others along the way. ASDA builds your leadership skills in ways that feel natural. It doesn’t just hand you responsibilities; it gives you a purpose behind them. I started to realize that leadership isn’t about the titles; it’s about showing up, following through, being dependable, and leading with heart and intention. I was always inspired by the leaders before me and I hope to do the same.
What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
I think the most vital quality in a leader is having a clear vision and leading with character, which is who you are when no one is watching. Without vision, there’s no direction, and without direction, a team or chapter can easily lose momentum or purpose. But just as important is how you carry yourself while working toward that vision. A leader’s character sets the tone for the culture of the group. The way you treat others, make decisions, and show up in tough moments matters. Without character, even the best goals can lose meaning, because the ends never justify the means.
Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
Everyone finds their “niche” in dental school. For some, it’s research, peds, or OMFS. For me, it was ASDA. ASDA gave me the space to grow. Not just into a stronger dental student, but into someone who’s building leadership and communication skills that will serve me well beyond school, like running a dental practice one day. My dental school experience would have looked completely different without ASDA. Through it, I’ve had the chance to meet inspiring leaders, connect with peers across the country, and most importantly, gain the confidence to take on roles I never thought I could. Getting involved in ASDA leadership isn’t just about holding a title; it’s about discovering what you’re capable of. If you're someone who's even thinking about applying for a position- do it. You won’t regret it. And if it doesn’t happen the first time, keep showing up. People notice your intention, your consistency, and your heart. ASDA rewards those who are genuinely invested in the work and the people. Keep going, keep growing because you never know where it might take you.
What future leadership roles in organized dentistry interest you and why?
I’m interested in taking on leadership roles within the ADA in the future, where I can serve as a voice for both current and future dental professionals. My experience in ASDA has shown me the power of advocacy, connection, and creating spaces where people feel seen and supported. I want to help future dental students find their niche, where they feel confident, capable, and empowered to grow as leaders. Whether that’s through mentorship, student programming, or policy work, I hope to continue building pathways that make leadership more accessible and fulfilling for the next generation of dentists.
