The ASDA Editorial Board works closely with staff to determine the strategy and themes for ASDA’s print publication, Contour. Editorial Board members develop the content for Contour and Mouth.

The Editorial Board comprises the editor-in-chief, two electronic editors and five contributing editors.

The Editor-in-Chief supervises content of the association's publications.

Contributing Editors are responsible for recruiting and contacting authors for publications and writing articles as needed.

Electronic Editors are responsible for recruiting and contacting bloggers and contributing content to the blog as needed.

Editor-in-Chief Duties

Manages the Editorial Board and chairs all meetings. Serves as a non-voting member of the Board of Trustees, which oversees all association activities, approves the annual budget and develops the association strategic plan.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be an active predoctoral member at the time of application and throughout the term of office.
  2. Must be able to attend all required meetings below.
  3. Must be able to complete assignments and responsibilities by established deadlines.
  4. Should serve at least one year as a contributing editor or electronic editor.
  5. Must have demonstrated qualitative journalistic experience.

Duties

  • Exercises editorial discretion over the content of association publications; guides the content of all print publications and contributes to blog content that directly relates to ASDA's magazine, Contour.
  • Maintains regular contact with each member of the Editorial Board and manages their assignments.
  • Writes or delegates the writing of editorials, articles and other materials.
  • Coordinates activities necessary for the acquisition of copy, acceptance of manuscripts and review of manuscripts when necessary.
  • Monitors national, regional and local issues relating to dental student needs and interests.
  • Identifies appropriate article topics and qualified authors.
  • Identifies themes for issues, when appropriate.
  • Determines criteria for content, authorship and number of editorials, as well as publication of letters to the editor and other opinion manuscripts.
  • Achieves consensus among Editorial Board members concerning desired courses of action and recommendations and presents Editorial Board recommendations to the Board of Trustees for consideration.
  • Mentors contributing editors.
  • Presents a report at each Board of Trustees meeting.
  • Reads all Board meeting material sent in advance.
  • May be appointed to serve as ASDA’s representative to ADA councils.

Contributing Editor Duties

Serves as a member of the Editorial Board. Focuses on issues of concern to dental students and new dentists to identify relevant article topics for ASDA's publications.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be an active predoctoral member at the time of application and throughout the term of office.
  2. Must be able to attend all required meetings below as well as participate in any conference calls deemed necessary by the chair.
  3. Must be able to complete assignments and responsibilities by established deadlines.
  4. Must have demonstrated qualitative journalistic experience.

  • Collaborates with the editor-in-chief to review and develop content in publications.
  • Identifies themes for issues, when appropriate.
  • Develops criteria for content, authorship and number of editorials, as well as publication of letters to the editor and other opinion manuscripts.

Electronic Editor Duties

Serves as a member of the Editorial Board. Focuses on issues of concern to dental students and new dentists to identify relevant blog post topics for ASDA's blog, Mouthing Off.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be an active predoctoral member at the time of application and throughout the term of office.
  2. Must be able to attend all required meetings below and participate in conference calls as deemed necessary by the chair.
  3. Must be able to complete assignments and responsibilities by established deadlines.
  4. Must have experience with WordPress technology and blogging.
  5. Must be able to maintain three posts to blog per week two weeks each month.
  6. Must be able to collaborate with the other electronic editor and coordinate blog schedule.
