How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
From being the president of the Oklahoma ASDA PreDental Chapter as an undergraduate student, to being the president of the Oklahoma ASDA chapter now, I think I have come a long way as a leader. I have learned to communicate better, have more patience, be more hands off at times and know when to step in when necessary. A lot of communications, time management, fund raising, volunteering and event planning went into this year. I could not have done it without my team, and our collaboration. My time as ASDA president has helped shape the type of leader, and future practice owner I want to be.

What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
Communication. Having good communications skills is the most important trait in my opinion when it comes to being a leader. You need to know when it is time to listen and absorb information, and when it is time to speak up. When it is time for feedback, one should not be defensive and ready to respond, that is the time to listen and think. You need to stay in touch with your team, sponsors, students, listen to what they want and do your best to provide them with what they need.

Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
ASDA creates incredible opportunities for students to be involved. There is no other organization on our campus that creates as many valuable networking and educational experiences and opportunities for the dental students. For the first time, our chapter sponsored more than 20 members this year to attend the District 9 meeting so they can firsthand experience what ASDA is about. Let’s not forget about all the different ways ASDA advocates for the dental students and the field of dentistry. When I meet other chapter leaders, I realize that ASDA truly builds your leadership skills like no other organization. The level of networking you get is incomparable.

What future leadership roles in organized denstiry interest you and why?
If I say I have not thought about running for the Oklahoma Dental Association I would be lying! I love what they do for the students on our campus, they always try to advocate for us and educate us about everything that affects us and our future such as different bills that the state tries to pass. Maybe one day I will be able to give back by being a part of the ODA!
