Dental School Admissions

What are the requirements to attend dental school?

  1. Take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) offered at various Prometric testing centers throughout the U.S.
  2. Submit an application to the ADEA Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). Applicants who are Texas residents wishing to apply to dental schools in Texas will use the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS).
  3. Provide additional materials required by the dental schools, as part of a secondary application.
  4. Interview at schools that invite you. ASDA developed tips for interviewing.

What resources are available to help me with the application process?

All predental members of ASDA receive a free copy of the handbook Getting Into Dental School: ASDA's Guide for Predental Students. This guide includes information on the application process, the DAT, interviewing tips from dental students and a listing of each dental school in the U.S. that includes their application requirements, tuition, undergraduate requirements and general information on the school. To obtain a copy, join ASDA as a predental member. ASDA also developed tips for the ADEA AADSAS application.

ASDA created an application toolkit to help you track the materials for your application so you are prepared when you begin the application process.

ASDA predental members receive discounts on Crack the DAT and CourseSaver resources to help you prepare for the DAT exam.

International dental student resources and tips are available here.

Where do I have a good chance of getting accepted with my stats?

ASDA's Getting Into Dental School: ASDA's Guide for Predental Students provides statistics on each U.S. dental school, including the ratio of the number of accepted students out of the number who applied, as well as minimum GPA, DAT average and undergraduate requirements for each applicant.

What sort of extracurricular activities look good on an application?

The most important factor is to get involved with activities that you enjoy. ASDA offers many activities at the local, district and national levels. Many ASDA chapters hold events for predentals. Each of the 11 districts organizes an annual meeting and offer sessions for predentals. At the national level, predental members are invited to the National Leadership Conference, Annual Session and National Dental Student Lobby Day. Additionally, predental members can serve in national leadership positions on ASDA’s Predental Advisory Committee. Other common activities include volunteer work, service trips and research.

How long do I have to wait to find out if I'm accepted?

ADEA AADSAS opens on June 1 and Dec. 1 is typically the day of first acceptance. Apply early, as some schools have early deadlines for applications. Be sure to check each school’s website for the application deadline.

What are my options if I don't get in my first try?

ASDA has developed a guide to help non-traditional students who may not get into dental school on their first try to determine best options. The information in this guide was provided by non-traditional students based on their experience. ASDA also held a webinar featuring three dental students sharing their experiences and advice on non-traditional paths to dental school. Read the ASDA News article “Refuse to take no for an answer: How I got into dental school after 6 tries.”

What are the steps for an international dentist to apply to a U.S. dental school’s advanced standing or international dental program?

  1. Apply for a DENTPIN through ADA so you can take the NBDE Part I administered by the ADA Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE).
  2. Get an evaluation report identifying the U.S. equivalents of educational qualifications you earned in your country.
  3. Take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), an English competency test offered online.
  4. Visit CAAPID, which is a centralized application system managed by ADEA. This site has a directory of most schools that have international programs along with application requirements and deadlines for each school. Please note: there are some programs that are not registered with CAAPID, so visit each school’s website and check the application process for each. Many schools require additional papers/information other than those required through CAAPID.
  5. For more information on this process, download ASDA’s Guide to Applying to U.S. Dental Schools for International Trained Dentists.

I paid dues to my chapter’s delegate in September and it is now November, why haven’t I received anything yet?

We're always looking for stories about dentistry, dental education, career transition (from dental school to the work place), professional issues, financial advice and "real life" dental school experiences.
