How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
Being involved in ASDA has helped strengthen my leadership skills by giving me opportunities to collaborate with others, take initiative, and guide group efforts toward shared goals. I have been able to hone my skills on communication, delegating responsibilities, and problem-solving when challenges arise. This leadership role has also taught me the importance of accountability and setting a positive example for others. Overall, my involvement in ASDA is building my confidence in leading a team, managing responsibilities, and supporting others to create a productive and welcoming environment.
What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
I think courage is the most vital quality in a leader. Leadership often requires stepping into uncomfortable or uncertain situations. Great leaders show courage by taking responsibility when wrong, being open minded, having discernment, and knowing when to pick their battles. Courage allows a leader to make difficult decisions, speak up when something is wrong, and take action when others hesitate. A courageous leader sets the tone for resilience and integrity, showing others that growth and progress come from facing challenges rather than avoiding them.
Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
Members should get involved with ASDA leadership positions, because it allows them to contribute to something bigger than themselves. ASDA provides valuable opportunities to develop leadership skills, build meaningful connections with peers and professionals, and become more involved in the dental community. Serving in a leadership role also helps students gain a deeper understanding of organized dentistry and the issues that impact the profession. Dental school can be demanding, and there is no single “right” way to navigate it, but being involved in ASDA offers support, mentorship, and experiences that can make the journey more rewarding and impactful.
What future leadership roles in organized dentistry interest you and why?
As a member of the inaugural class at LCSDM, much of the school’s foundation and culture is still being established. Because of that, I would value the opportunity to return in the future to help guide and mentor incoming classes. Whether by sharing my experiences, advocating for students within the evolving dental profession, or passing along lessons learned. Being able to contribute to the continued growth of the program and support future students would be a meaningful way to stay involved in organized dentistry.
