Cam Awesome
Opening Session
Friday, November 20 | 8:30-9:45 a.m. CST
12-Time National Champion Heavyweight Olympic Boxer and Former Captain of Team USA Boxing
Growing up, Cam dealt with academic and social challenges including bullying and anxiety which led him to join a boxing gym to protect himself. Unable to make any of the teams he tried out for, boxing became an unexpected opportunity for Cam to find his place. He quickly fell in love with the sport and recognized his potential to excel, dedicating every waking moment to becoming the best boxer possible. Through his journey, Cam learned the importance of discipline, perseverance and believing in his ability to overcome challenges.
Cam's resilience served as his superpower in the ring. Within two years in the sport in 2008, Cam won the National Championship, claiming the title as the #1 Super Heavyweight boxer in the country. Cam holds the title as the Winningest Boxer in USA Boxing history, earning four Golden Gloves Championships, six US Championships, three PAL National Championships, six Ringside Championships and three Olympic Trials. Cam has accomplished remarkable feats; his story even inspired a NETFLIX Original feature in the documentary Counterpunch. The successes in his life are due in part to the many losses he endured on his journey, making his accomplishments even more significant. Drawing on these experiences, Cam will use his story to help NLC attendees recognize their own ability to navigate adversity, build resilience and develop a mindset for success.
For dental students and emerging leaders, Cam's story offers a reminder that setbacks are not the end of the journey, but opportunities to learn, grow and continue moving forward.
