How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
ASDA has played a significant role in helping me develop my leadership skills during my first year of dental school. As the inaugural chapter president, I have had the unique opportunity to lead a team while building something entirely new, an experience that none of us had navigated before. Through this process, I have strengthened important skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability.
Establishing a new chapter has required creativity, collaboration, and a willingness to learn along the way. Throughout the process, ASDA's resources, guidance, and support have been invaluable, helping us overcome challenges and create a strong foundation for future students. This experience has increased my confidence as a leader and taught me the importance of working together toward a shared vision.
What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
I believe one of the most important qualities of an effective leader is active listening. It is essential to listen to your teammates and genuinely consider their ideas, experiences, and perspectives. No leader has all the answers, and some of the best decisions come from hearing different viewpoints and fostering open discussion. By actively listening, a leader can make more informed decisions that reflect the needs and goals of the group as a whole. This approach not only leads to better outcomes but also helps build trust, collaboration, and a stronger team environment.
Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
ASDA has so much to offer, and I believe you need to fully immerse yourself in the organization to truly understand its impact. One of the best ways to do that is by taking on a leadership role. ASDA is much more than a student organization—it is an organization that genuinely cares about the well-being, success, and future of dental students.
By getting involved with ASDA, students have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for both current and future dental students. ASDA empowers students to have a voice in issues that affect dental education and the profession as a whole. Through advocacy, leadership, and service, students can contribute to positive change and help shape the future of dentistry.
What future leadership roles in organized dentistry interest you and why?
As someone from Montana, I would love to become involved with the Montana Dental Association in the future. Being involved would allow me to stay informed about the issues affecting Montana dentists, oral healthcare access, and the patients we serve. I believe it is important for dental professionals to be engaged in advocacy and to help represent the needs of communities that may not always have a strong voice in healthcare discussions. By staying involved, I hope to contribute to positive change and help improve access to quality dental care for Montanans.
